In Ming and Qing Dynasties, Dehua porcelain spread to Europe in large numbers. Its ivory white glaze (also known as cream white) had a great influence on the art of European porcelain.
觀音，即觀世音菩薩，《普陀洛迦新志》卷十記：「及萬歷中，為極盛。」證明觀音奉祀在萬歷年間極為鼎盛。基于觀音信仰與航海外銷貿易有著密切關系，故渡海觀音形象多見以神情自若，臨風飄拂，但足下卻波濤翻滾，宛如乘風破浪。福建德化窯因靠海之便，其所作之瓷塑多以釋道為主，至晚明期間，工藝則更臻于巔峰，尤以何朝宗創作之觀音造像因面目生動，衣紋遒勁，而被視為上乘之作，加上傳世數量精罕藝絕，大件作品則更顯寥若晨星。

德化窯胎土氧化鐵含量極低，成就其白瓷釉料瑩潤，色呈牙白，溫藹悅目，讓人過目難忘、驟眼可認。有別于德化窯其他陶人，何朝宗所制宗教塑像，胎體厚 重，造型新穎，別樹一幟。乾隆二十八年（1763）刊刻的《泉州府志》中指：「又有何朝宗者，不知何許人，或云祖籍德化。寓郡城，善陶瓷像，為僧伽大士， 天下傳寶之……」。另據檔案記載，清代慈寧宮內大佛堂西配殿曾供奉過何朝宗款識的白瓷觀音一尊。
