高古玉器(漢代前)的取材,有的源于地方玉 ,有的來自新疆的和闐玉,大都取材于河床中的籽料或山流水料,這兩種玉料因剝離礦床時間很久,在不同的外界環境下,其自身已形成了玉皮和沁色。但是古人制玉卻認為皮和沁全是雜質而將其去掉只保留玉的精華部分、(商代的一些小動物留有玉皮及巧色) 高古玉器大部分都帶有沁色。玉質的不同、地域不同、土壤的環境不同、埋藏的時間不同等因素造成玉的沁色也不同,有時一件玉器上會有幾種沁色。分辨古玉的各種沁色可以斷定古玉的真偽。我們如今看到真古玉的沁色都是成器后沁入的。

It can be concluded that ancient jade is true or false by distinguishing its various colors. Now we see that the color of the real ancient jade is all after it is made.

高古玉沁色種類凡多,有紅沁、朱砂沁、土沁、水沁、金屬沁、水銀沁等等。所呈現的色彩主要有紅色、黃色、黑色、白色、綠色、紫色、藍色及過渡色。沁色一詞是一個籠統的概念,實際上應當是外界化學元素沁入玉中所呈現出的色彩變化和狀態特征。色彩是有別于玉質本色的來自于外界的其他色素。非交互狀態表現形式為色彩的相對獨立性,沒有與玉的分子結構產生互變。交互狀態表現形式為外來原素與玉內原素產生互變,從而改變玉的本質結構變化,這一過程往往需要很長時間。
