豬寶生長需要很長的生長周期才能完全成熟，現(xiàn)在的養(yǎng)殖時間都比較短，雖然有時候也會發(fā)現(xiàn)豬寶，但被鑒定過后很多都屬于生長未成熟的豬寶，不具有藥用價值，豬寶的膽紅素要達到百分之十，才具有要有價值，當然不成熟的豬寶也有人出錢作為藏品進行收藏，價格自然和成熟之后的豬寶不能同日而論。
動物腸胃中的“寶”，大家比較熟知的一般是牛黃、豬砂、狗寶、馬寶、雞寶、鴨寶、這六樣也被譽為中藥六寶。牛黃，是牛科動物黃牛或水牛的膽囊結(jié)石；狗寶則為犬科動物的胃結(jié)石；豬砂、馬寶，則是病馬胃腸道中所生結(jié)石；鴨寶、雞寶，也是它們的胃腸道或膽囊結(jié)石。不過，目前除了牛黃較常見之外，其它五寶相當難得，具有極高的藥用價值。它的藥用功效類似牛黃，主要用于清熱、解毒、化痰、定驚對人體有鎮(zhèn)靜作用?？芍委熜奶?、失眠等癥。有豬砂的豬一般有禿毛，吃食少，體溫高，行走無力，軀體枯瘦，眼睛發(fā)紅，臥不安寧，嚎叫不止的特征。宰豬開膛時，應(yīng)檢查膽囊、膽管、肝管有無硬塊。如有硬塊，立即刮剝?nèi)〕?，剝除粘附著的?nèi)膜等物，再用干凈棉花、絨線包扎好，防止破裂散落，然后掛在陰涼處讓其自然干燥，不可風(fēng)吹日曬，以免影響質(zhì)量。梅州市食品藥品監(jiān)督管理局的一位工作人員表示，“豬砂”價格主要由市場調(diào)節(jié)，相關(guān)部門難以監(jiān)管，“但是我們一直在完善中成藥尤其是含名貴中藥材品種的中成藥的質(zhì)量標準”。
自古以來流傳至今的民間三寶“牛黃、狗寶、馬寶”由來已久，和被臨床驗證有諸多療效，豬寶這一說法也是最近幾年才被知曉，究竟有沒有多大的作用，一切要按照科學(xué)依據(jù)來決定，在沒有權(quán)威醫(yī)療機構(gòu)給出的結(jié)論之前，一切都是沒有多少價值的，但作為收藏等待升值或者興趣愛好，要另當別論。動物的這種寶類結(jié)石由于稀罕，可以珍藏，藥用價值大。
