Yuan Datou was one of the main currency in circulation during the Republic of China. "Yuan Datou" is the spoken name of Yuan Shikai series coins, which is strictly called "Yuan Shikai statue carrying Jiahe silver coins".
After the demise of the Qing Dynasty, Yuan Shikai became president in April 1912. In view of the fact that the Beiyang government had cast coins and banknotes at that time, the circulation of Chinese and foreign currencies was more than 100 kinds, the circulation was different, the circulation was chaotic, the circulation was tedious, and the people had accumulated resentment for a long time. At the same time, the Beiyang government also wanted to use the money to reform to solve the problem of military expenditure, so it decided to cast out the national currency. In order to improve his dominant position, Yuan Shikai cast his head on the currency, from which Yuan Daotou came from.
On February 7, 1914, Yuan Shikai promulgated the State currency regulations and the detailed rules for the implementation of the State currency regulations in the form of a presidential decree. The main content of the regulations is to stipulate that the right of casting and issuing coins shall be owned by the government of the Republic of China.
Private coin: refers to the private casting or local separatist strength of the military and political dignitaries without the approval of the central regime privately cast coins. Private coins are made for circulation.
Folk private imitation when the official money cast coins, usually poor quality, used to call the private version, the old private. Local separatist strength military and political dignitaries privately cast coins without the approval of the central regime, because of certain economic and technical strength, the casting quality is higher, but it is quite different from the central version. To a certain extent, this kind of money has the nature of local currency, which is commonly called the local version or warlord version.
It should be pointed out that during the Beiyang government of the Republic of China, the warlords of each faction dominated one side, and the coins they cast were called military valve coins, such as Tang Jiyao coins, Sichuan Chinese version and Fujian version, big buckle and other Yuan Shikai round silver coins. During the period of the National Government, the Kuomintang gradually eliminated the warlords from all parts of the country, and local privately minted coins were called local coins, such as the Yunnan version of the large head and the ocean, and so on.
