古籍是中國古代書籍的簡稱。古籍善本，清版本目錄學家張之洞的解釋為：一是足本，沒有刪節和缺卷;二是精本，精校精注，錯誤極少;三是舊本，即傳世很久的木刻本、傳抄本和線裝書。目前所說的藝術品市場上的古籍善本，則主要包括刻本、墨跡本、碑帖、印譜、信札以及其他文獻。

“古籍收藏要耐得住寂寞。”沈津認為，跟字畫、瓷器等古玩不同，古籍善本既不能掛在墻上欣賞，也不能拿在手上把玩。沒有一定的文化素養，沒有相當的歷史知識和古漢語功底，讀通都不可能，更不用說讀懂或者鉆研它的版本。“當然也有人把它放在書櫥里，當成擺設，作為附庸風雅的表現，但書終究是用來讀的。”
