民國三年鑄造的袁世凱銀幣有很多不同的版本，在正面的圖案是基本相同的，但是在背面的圖案和一些細節方面還是有所不同的。辛亥革命以后，袁世凱就任“臨時大總統”之職，后又成為正式大總統。
當時，為了鞏固國內政局穩定，發展民族經濟，也為“制憲”和“稱帝”作準備，于是發布《國幣條例》，毅然決定在全國“統一幣制”。民國三年版正面為袁世凱側面像，上列“中華民國三年”。“年”字后沒有“造”字，其他年版都在“年”字后面有一“造”字。三年版“民”字中有一“點”，而其他年版民字無“點”。鑄造量較少的版別有：“O”記版、粗發版、三角圓版、開口貝版、加鑄“甘肅”兩字版、背雙星版、大胡須版、大耳朵版等。“袁大頭”日漸走俏，價格一路上揚，因此絕大多數業內人士認為“袁大頭”是銀元收藏價值，具有較高的升值潛力。
