開元通寶,亦稱開通元寶,是唐代正式發行的第一種貨幣,也是發行量最大,沿用時間最長的貨幣。由于其質量合理,通貨控制得當,錢幣做工比較精美,故深受百姓喜愛。其錢文由初唐四大書法家之一歐陽詢所書。值得一提的是后世錢幣通寶一詞,即是開元通寶之肇始。《舊唐書·食貨志上》記載:“武德四年七月,廢五銖錢,行開元通寶錢。開元錢之文,為給事中歐陽詢制詞及書,文字莊重、雋秀、挺拔,時稱其工。其字在篆隸之間,其詞先上后下,次右左讀之。自上及右回環讀之,其義亦通,流俗謂之開通元寶錢。”
