最初的布幣，保留著其作為工具的模樣，留有裝柄的的銎，原始而厚重，故稱(chēng)為空首布;后來(lái)逐漸減輕，變薄，變小，幣身完全成為片狀，稱(chēng)為平首布。平首布上面通常鑄有地名或紀(jì)重的文字。后來(lái)王莽的新朝亦曾造布幣。貨幣是歷史的產(chǎn)物，它是隨著經(jīng)濟(jì)的發(fā)展而出現(xiàn)的。據(jù)史料記載，在商朝時(shí)代已有了貝殼的使用，雖然這并不能證明貝殼已發(fā)展成為十足的貨幣，但至少已接近貨幣了，而由農(nóng)器進(jìn)化到刀幣和布幣，確實(shí)需要漫長(zhǎng)的演變。把銅用來(lái)作為貨幣，也許是從仿鑄貝開(kāi)始的。銅貝也有幾種:有些凸起得更像真貝，鋸齒紋成曲線(xiàn);有些則比較扁平，鋸齒紋成直線(xiàn)。隨著農(nóng)業(yè)生產(chǎn)發(fā)展的需要，生產(chǎn)工具日益顯得重要，于是人們?cè)诮粨Q時(shí)就將刀、鏟、紋輪等作為貨幣一樣使用。一個(gè)地方對(duì)一種生產(chǎn)工具用得最多的話(huà)，這種生產(chǎn)工具就變成了這一地區(qū)的貨幣。從農(nóng)業(yè)工具演化而來(lái)的貨幣，到了戰(zhàn)國(guó)時(shí)就形成三大體系:布幣、刀幣、環(huán)幣錢(qián)。 "布幣"乍一聽(tīng)去，好象是由布料制作而成的，但其實(shí)它也是一種金屬貨幣。古代有一種農(nóng)具叫做镈，布幣的形狀就很象镈，由于"镈"、"布"同音，所以人們就把這種很象镈的錢(qián)幣叫做"布幣"了。

The shape of cloth coin was very similar to Ba. Because of the homonym of "Ba" and "Bu", people called this kind of money which was very similar to Ba coin "Bu coin".
