田黃石明代被稱作“黃石”，雖也拿來作印石，但并不受重視，直至清初才漸受賞識。田黃石具備細、潔、潤、膩、溫、凝印石之六德。田黃材質溫潤凝膩，在軟質雕刻石中居第一品。明、清各朝均被作為貢品獻入皇宮，被雕刻成御用璽印及藝術擺件，故田黃石又被尊為“石中之王”、“石帝”，故其身價無與倫比。
