1904年光緒三十年湖北銀圓局正式改名銀幣局，開鑄新銀元。湖北省壹兩正面中央銘文“大清銀幣”，是中國最早有“大清銀幣”字樣的銀幣。

俗稱“湖北一兩”是流通銀幣中，除吉林廠平一兩外唯一的“兩”制銀幣，巧合的是兩者背部皆為雙龍圖案。湖北一兩推行并不成功，失敗原因主要是製錢與銅元間的兌換基本上是以七錢二分銀元為主，雖然比價每日有所變化，但兩制幣推出并沒有使用上的方便，反而新增困擾。所以現在留存極其少，相當珍罕。
