隕石在大氣層中燃燒磨蝕，形狀多渾圓而無棱無角。熔坑：隕石外表都布有大小不一、深淺不等的凹坑，即熔蝕坑。不少隕石還具有淺而長條形氣印，可能是低熔點礦藏脫落留下的。熔殼：隕石在通過大氣層時，極高的溫度導致隕石外表熔融，產生了一層微米至毫米級別玻璃質層，這便是熔殼。當隕石在地表存在較長時刻后，其熔殼易被風化而消失掉。比重：隕石由于含鐵鎳比重較大，鐵隕石比重可達8，石隕石也因常含20鐵鎳，比一般巖石比重也大些。可是，存在極少量的石質隕石（如碳質球粒隕石等）因不含或金屬含量極低，其密度與一般地球巖石類似。磁性：各種隕石因含有鐵而具強度不等的磁性。經風化的隕石沒有磁性，因而也就不算隕石了。條痕：隕石在無釉瓷板上沖突一般沒有條痕或僅有淺灰色條痕，而鐵礦石的條痕則是黑色或棕紅色，以此加以差異。璃隕石的成因：玻璃隕石到底是怎樣組成的，現在尚有很大爭議。一部分科學家認為是無限的隕石或彗星（核）碰擊地球，使地球表面物質熔融，濺射到空中，急速冷卻而成。但是直到現在為止，對澳亞區和北美區的玻璃隕石群，并未找到呼應的隕石坑，從玻璃隕石分布的普遍性來看，這種觀點也值得嫌疑；也有一部分人認為，玻璃隕石是從宇宙空間下降到地球大氣層的玻璃雨，以致有人眼見了這種玻璃隕石的下降。玻璃隕石易碎，決裂后多具貝殼狀斷口。內地上發現的玻璃隕石的大小，從幾毫米至十幾公分不等，反射光下發暗，但薄的邊沿透亮，并具有不相同的色彩，從黃色到綠色，從橄欖褐色到暗褐色。微玻璃隕石只在海洋沉積物中有發現，其大小大小從數毫米到約40微米以下。與相近內地上的玻璃隕石具有相同的年歲、組成和形狀
