民國二十一年(1932年)中央造幣廠鑄中華民國二十一年孫中山像金本位幣壹圓銀幣，俗稱下三鳥銀幣。位于上海的中央造幣廠于民國二十一年開鑄金本位銀幣并投放市場流通。此幣為國民委托美國費城造幣廠總雕刻師辛諾克（Joun Sinnock）制作。銀幣的正面中央鐫孫中山側面肖像，上環(huán)鐫“中華民國二十一年”八個漢字，銀幣背面中央鐫雙帆船航行于海面，上環(huán)鐫“金本位幣壹圓”六個字。帆船左側鐫海上日出和九條芒線，海面波浪中鐫三只低飛的海鷗。
中華民國二十一年版銀幣有著戲劇性命運。“九·一八“事變之前，國民政府發(fā)行了民國二十一年銀元，幣面刻有一艘雙桅帆船，頂上有三只飛鳥，東方有一輪初升的太陽，俗稱“三鳥”。寓意“國運”、“一帆風順”、“旭日東升”。不料剛發(fā)行，正逢日本軍隊發(fā)動“九·一八”事變，當時有人把空中圖案附會為日本國正要升起，三只鳥被說成是東三省要飛掉了，因此輿論嘩然，紛紛指責國民黨。政府也感到“天上的飛鳥是外國人的徽記，凌駕于中國帆船之上”，都認為不妥，馬上下令收回這版銀幣，以制止謠言流傳。如此小小方圓之間，竟然蘊藏著如此深刻的歷史內(nèi)涵。具有深遠的歷史紀念意義；同時，還是考古和研究中國歷史文化難得的實物。此種銀幣存世量極為稀少，尤其是品相好的更為稀缺，因此很受錢幣收藏愛好者青睞。
