雙柱銀元是西班牙從1535年至1821年期間在墨西哥鑄造的，因幣面鑄著西班牙皇帝的肖像，所以稱為"西班牙銀元"。
西班牙銀元版別有多種，最常見的幣面為查理三世(1759-1788)肖像;背面上部為皇冠圖形，中下部四格內，右上方和左下方為動物圖案，左上方和右下方為城堡圖案;中下部四格兩側各有一根由卷軸裹著的圓柱，成形，所以又稱"雙柱銀元"。
