經國務院批準，中國人民銀行于1962年4月20日開始發行第三套人民幣。
這套人民幣票面設計圖案比較集中地反映了當時我國國民經濟以農業為基礎、以工業為主導、農輕重并舉的方針；繼承和發揚了第二套人民幣的技術傳統、風格，制版過程中精雕細刻，機器與傳統的手工雕刻相結合，使圖案、花紋線條精細；油墨配色合理，色彩新穎、明快；1元、5元券采用定向、不定向五星水印紙，10元券采用天安門圖景固定水印紙，增強了人民幣的反假反偽能力。
這套人民幣是我國自行設計，使用我國自己研制的印鈔專用設備印制，體現了當時我國的科技水平和國情，是我國印制工業進入獨立自主、自力更生新時期的重要標志。
第三套人民幣已于2000年7月1日停止流通，為收藏之珍品。
