黑釉瓷色黑如漆，手感光滑潤澤，其釉面光可鑒人。黑定施釉有厚薄之分，釉成分中氧化鐵含量較高，經高溫還原后成了三氧化二鐵，因而色澤鉗黑。黑定物件的口沿因高溫下釉流動快速而形成了一道不規則的醬口，透過醬口可見其胎。黑定施釉多數不及底，底部均露胎之原色，強烈的色彩反差，給黑定增添了一種神秘的色彩。這件黑釉梅瓶，其高：36.5cm，瓶身最粗處周長59cm。小口，短頸，豐肩漸收斂至底，圈足。胎質細膩漆黑，通體施黑釉，釉至足跟。其釉面流淌的淚痕，與修胎時遺留的絲刷痕跡，這些都是定窯的顯著特征。上半部分呈螺紋下降，瓶內部施全釉，釉色滋潤，明亮。器型古樸，端莊，秀美。通體施黑釉，釉色如墨似漆，濃郁深沉，近足露胎，可見堅質細膩的胎骨。釉色屬黑釉中最美發色，成色穩定、深邃。觀其釉色內部閃爍如星空，結晶深黃褐色，遠觀不顯山露水，深藏黑釉之中，胎壁薄而堅致，釉不及底，足平切，刀口利落不拖泥帶水，為宋代黑定典型特征。
