一般說,銅墨盒出現在清朝中期。同治初年,陳寅生開始在盒面上刻上書法或山水花鳥圖案,使器物變得精美。齊如山在他的《北京三百六十行》中說: “刻墨盒始于陳寅生”。文物學家鄧之誠在《骨董瑣記》中也記載:“京師廠 肆專業墨盒者,推萬禮齋為最先;刻字則始詳于陳寅生秀....時同治初元也。”到了民國年間,北京又出了一位繼陳寅生之后冠絕一時的刻銅大家,他就是當時琉璃廠同古堂圖章墨盒鋪的主人張樾丞。末代皇帝的“宣御覽之寶”、“宣統御筆”和建國后的“中央人民政府”等璽印都是出自張樾丞之手。當時銅墨盒的刻制,除專業刻銅家外,.還有文人畫家的參與。畫家、金石家姚茫父就時常奏刀,自畫自刻。他也常與陳師曾合作,陳畫姚刻之墨盒,為盒中精品。張樾丞也曾與當時許多名士文人如陳師曾、金城、溥儒、齊白石、陳半丁、王雪濤等合作,由這些藝術家繪圖,供其作刻稿。一些名不見經傳的刻家,所刻、繪圖亦有相當精美者,在收藏中當擇優藏取。
