古代貴族在青銅器上鑄刻銘文有明確的功利目的，主要是顯揚(yáng)祖先，以體現(xiàn)子孫孝心。史書有載，《墨子·非命》“書之竹帛，鏤之金石，琢之盤盂”，《戰(zhàn)國策·趙策》“三分趙國，壤地著于盤盂”，《呂氏春秋》有“功名鑄于盤盂”的記載，《墨子·魯問》：“攻其鄰國、殺其民人，以為銘于鐘鼎，傳遺后世子孫。”大凡對上帝的崇拜、建國的功烈、諸侯的分封、拜官賜命、征伐紀(jì)功、獻(xiàn)俘大典等皆鑄之于銘文，以榮耀于當(dāng)世，傳之于子孫，作為世家寵榮的護(hù)身符。盡管如此，青銅盤上的銘文并不是自盤一出現(xiàn)就伴其左右，而是體現(xiàn)出從無到有，由少到多，又由多到少的變化軌跡和一定的時代特點(diǎn)。雖然青銅盤出現(xiàn)的很早，但商代早中期的青銅盤上至今尚未見有銘文，直至商代晚期青銅盤上始出現(xiàn)數(shù)量少，篇幅短，通常1～4字不等的銘文。西周晚期盤上銘文布局工整，字形大小相近，筆道秀勁有力，字體呈長方形，如虢季子白盤銘文，行次寬松，字跡剛勁，字劃勻稱，結(jié)體豎長，結(jié)構(gòu)工穩(wěn)，字體呈現(xiàn)出嶄新的藝術(shù)風(fēng)格，章法上縱橫成行列，無可挑剔，這種風(fēng)格一直延續(xù)到春秋時期。與已知的春秋時期秦國文字有某些共同特征，成為探尋秦國文字形體來源的重要資料。所以說青銅銘文盤在現(xiàn)在市場上深受藏家喜愛，有很高的收藏價值。
