民國十六年北伐戰爭成功，國民政府定都南京，南京造幣廠先取原模，重鑄孫中山開國紀念幣，后又改動幣反面的英文和花邊(六角星)，鑄成新版，批量發行，俗稱“小頭”。爾后四年孫中山開國紀念幣鑄量不下數2億，與“袁大頭”一同變成舊我國的首要流轉貨幣。孫中山開國紀念銀幣，俗稱小頭，是民國時期流轉的首要貨幣之一。是榜首枚將大總統頭像更換皇家龍圖的國幣，這意味著宣告清王朝統治的結束，我國從此進入共和制的新紀年。此外，幣面鐫刻中英文字，意在告知外國人，我國新的敞開年代降臨。在集藏范疇，歷來對重大前史事件高度靈敏的金銀幣保藏商場，會賦予藏品共同的價值，它的行情也會順勢火爆。

中華民國開國紀念幣是1911年12月29日經辛亥革命后，光復的17省代表在南京推選孫中山為中華民國臨時大總統。民國成立時鼓鑄的紀念幣。由于幣制尚未建立，除四川改鑄大漢銀幣，福建改鑄中華元寶外，主要的造幣廠，大都仍沿用前清鋼模鑄造銀幣，以供流通需要。由于幣制混亂，臨時政府財政部長陳錦濤，于民國元年3月11日呈文大總統孫中山，鼓鑄10萬元紀念銀幣以為整頓。圖案采用大總統孫中山肖像，以后的通用銀幣再改花紋式樣。孫中山令財政部行文，同意鼓鑄紀念幣，并命令其余的通用銀幣新花紋，“中間應繪五谷模型，取豐歲足民之義，垂勸農務本之規”，訓令財政部速制新模，分令各省造幣廠照式鼓鑄。不久，財政部就頒下新模給江南(南京)、湖北、廣東等造幣廠依式鑄造，這就是“中華民國孫中山像開國紀念幣”的由來。
