1916年護國戰爭結束后，云南都督唐繼堯野心膨脹，利用護國戰爭樹立起來的威望向外擴張，與川、黔軍閥連年混戰，在滇軍內部為爭權奪地互相混戰，致使軍費開支龐大，單靠沿襲舊制征收的田賦、鹽稅、厘金等稅，已不能滿足軍閥戰爭的需要，于是唐繼堯采取各種手段進行搜刮，以充軍餉，鑄造鎳幣便是其中之一。
唐繼堯不愿鑄壹角銀幣，認為太費工時影響造幣余利的提高，但卻熱衷于鑄造壹角鎳幣，因為鑄鎳幣成本低，利益更大。在1924——1935年間，從日本進口原料，鼓鑄為輔幣，分壹毫、半毫兩種。
1919年后，云南的白銀來源減少，外流增加，云南造幣廠缺乏鑄料。富滇銀行紙幣隨著發行增加，已出現貶值、貼水。從1922年百元紙幣兌換銀元98元，至1923-1926年僅兌銀元40元。1923年，經云南省公署批準，云南造幣分廠從日本定制鋼模，購入鎳幣原料，于1924年起開鑄壹毫鎳幣的初鑄版。約在8月，市面出現偽制鎳幣。滇省公署令造幣廠改鑄鎳幣式樣，減輕幣重，周圍加銀花邊。省公署布告自9月1日起實行鑄用新幣。原擬鑄鎳幣50萬元，后因需要既多，省庫亦可獲鑄幣余利，遂逐年加鑄。1924年1月22日，富滇銀行總辦馬為麟、會辦張鴻翼和張之霖呈請省政府規定鎳幣價格每1枚換當十銅幣10枚或紙幣1.4角；鎳幣2.4元當銀元1元。2月2日，省政府布告批準富滇銀行呈請的鎳幣價格，通令行使。1935年11月，南京國民政府宣布法幣政策，云南停鑄鎳幣，1937年9月，中央政府與云南省政府達成協定，以新滇幣作為法幣的輔幣，鎳幣一律照舊流通，換算率為鎳幣5角兌法幣1角，鎳幣在云南的重點流通地區為昭通等地,，價格極不一致，也流入四川宜賓等地區。20世40年代前期，金沙江上游地區甚至主要流通鎳幣，政府一再重申法幣1元換鎳幣20枚，而實際上僅能兌4角鎳幣。1948年8月，南京國民政府公布《金圓券發行辦法》，10月26日財政部函復云南財政廳，滇鑄壹毫鎳幣可照面值與金圓輔幣同樣行使。1950年3月，鎳幣停止流通。
