明代中期，東西方開始在沿海地區開始貿易，對當時的文化有極大的影響。而且外國銀元隨之流入中國。在清代初期，隨著東西方的貿易逐漸的發展進入正軌，外國銀元流入中國的數量相應增多，行用區域也不斷擴展。在外國銀元的影響下，我國東南沿海各省率先出現仿照外國銀元而鑄的銀幣。由于它們都是以人工土法打制而成的，制作工藝比較粗糙，形如餅狀，故被稱作“銀餅”
