舍利塔，是存放佛祖釋迦牟尼或后世高僧舍利子的塔，一種是存放舍利子和經書的塔，是中國五千年文明史的載體之一，禮拜舍利寶塔是人們表達對諸佛皈依和感恩的方式。據傳，2500年前釋迦牟尼涅槃，弟子們在火化他的遺體時從灰燼中得到了一塊頭頂骨、兩塊骨、四顆牙齒、一節中指指骨舍利和八萬四千顆珠狀真身舍利子。佛祖的這些遺留物被信眾視為圣物，爭相供奉。依《長阿含經》卷四〈游行經〉所述，釋尊于拘尸城雙樹間般涅槃后，佛舍利八分，獲得佛陀舍利子的國王后來各自建立舍利塔安置供養這些佛陀舍利子。另據《阿育王傳》卷一載，佛滅度百年后，阿育王搜集佛遺存的舍利，建造八萬四千寶塔供養之。除上文所載之阿育王集佛舍利盛于八萬四千寶篋，建立八萬四千塔之外，其他各地亦有供養舍利的情形。相傳，阿育王將佛祖留下的舍利收集起來重新分成若干份，送往世界各地，建塔供奉。據說，這些舍利的一部分傳到了中國，中國各地便有了佛教舍利塔。“舍利子”原稱為“舍利”，后來才稱為舍利子。舍利原是印度語譯為(設立羅)等各種不一之名稱,其意義為(遺留物)或(靈骨)，但舍利子也不完全經由火化而得，有很多天降舍利的實例。“舍利子”為個人戒定慧修行成就之結晶。也是說明修行者已得成果的見證，可以堅定弟子修行。因此佛徒看到舍利即像看到佛菩薩，頂禮參拜，誠心供養。"
