1911年10月10日，辛亥革命爆發，起義軍占領了武昌。12月29日，光復的十七省代表在南京推選孫中山先生為臨時大總統。1912年1月3日，南京臨時政府宣告成立。為慶祝推翻帝制，建立民國，南京造幣廠于同年鑄造發行了中華民國開國紀念幣。
