一萬元牧馬圖發行于1951年5月17日，其時正值解放戰爭結束不久，流通市場物資匱乏，又是在偏遠地區發行的貨幣，因此發行規模很有限。短短三年零十一個月之后，這張紙幣就停止流通了，使得總體發行量少之又少。另外，建國初期，紙幣技術水平低下，尤其造紙工藝欠缺，導致當時的貨幣極易被磨損破壞，以前人們也沒有人民幣收藏意識，六十年時間里絕大多數票王已經被損耗掉了。這種種原因綜合起來，造成第一套人民幣壹萬圓牧馬圖存世量以兩位數計，而其中品相在九品以上的甚至不超過五張,這意味著高品相的第一套人民幣大全套至多不會超過五套。
第一套人民幣是在中國共產黨的領導下、中國人民解放戰爭勝利進軍的形勢下，由人民政府所屬國家銀行在1948年12月1日印制發行的唯一的法定貨幣。在圖樣題材上，選擇當時經濟建設和新社會人們生活的圖案，生動展現出中國解放事業及建國初期人們的政治、生活、文化、社會百態，使人們領略到在黨的領導下全國各族人民齊心協力、艱苦奮斗、自力更生建設新中國、新社會的如火如荼激情歲月。第一套人民幣的發行保證了解放戰爭勝利進軍的需要，促進了經濟的恢復與發展，最終成為統一的全國貨幣，結束了國民黨統治下幾十年的幣制混亂歷史。
“牧馬圖”是第一套人民幣中最為珍貴的一枚，目前價格為數十萬元。第一套人民幣從1948年開始發行，1955年停止流通，共有12種面值、62種版別。其中部分版別的發行量較為稀少，加上停止流通50多年來流傳甚少，因此第一套人民幣在集幣市場中地位非同一般，價值從幾年前的10多萬元更再度攀升。
牧馬圖被專家譽為十二珍品之首，目前市場體系超過了本身價值的100倍，價格達100多萬，第一套人民幣稀少，而牧馬圖更是不可多見，由于當時防偽技術的不完善，導致目前市場假幣泛濫，從而更加抬高了真幣的價格。此藏品保存完好，是難得一見到美品，是中國第一套人民幣中最為珍貴的品種，值得收藏。
