1895年，英國(guó)政府利用印度的孟買、加爾各答的造幣廠鑄造了新的貿(mào)易銀元，即“站洋”，它是當(dāng)時(shí)英國(guó)政府為適應(yīng)對(duì)華貿(mào)易和在香港市場(chǎng)流通而設(shè)計(jì)發(fā)行的。該幣發(fā)行后最初流通于我國(guó)的廣東、廣西兩省，1900年以后開(kāi)始在北方使用，特別在北京，天津地區(qū)更為盛行，并逐步占領(lǐng)了我國(guó)自南到北的大部分地區(qū)，套取了大量的白銀。
