早在明朝中期，西班牙就已在墨西哥制造“本洋”銀幣(俗稱“雙柱”)，至清代乾隆、嘉慶年間，中國對外貿易日趨繁榮，從外國流入中國的銀幣種類也日漸增多。至清朝末年，帝國主義列強掀起了瓜分中國的狂潮。清政府腐敗無能，無法抵御外敵侵略，先后與外國列強簽訂了一系列不平等條約，使中國淪為半封建半殖民地社會。外國列強為了在華爭奪利益，幾十個國家的銀元先后涌入中國，通過不公平貿易，換取我國大量白銀。除“雙柱”外，還有墨西哥“鷹洋”、英國“站洋”、印度支那“坐洋”、日本“龍洋”和德國威廉一世紀念銀幣等品種，其中英國“站洋”以制作精良、圖案美觀而著稱于世。
