據資料記載：清咸豐年間（1851-1861年），太平天國農民起義發展迅猛，并在江蘇南京建都，此時清政府賴以鑄錢之用的滇銅（云南省出產的銅料），因道路阻斷而無法運進北京。一方面是鎮壓起義急需大量的軍餉開銷，一方面是鑄錢的原材料告缺，給清政府造成了嚴重的財政困難，最終迫使清政府自咸豐三年開始發行紙幣和改鑄大錢來彌補財政虧空。
咸豐三年（1853年）三月五月，戶部首先開鑄當十大錢，文曰咸豐元寶，重六錢，與制錢相輔而行。七月乃增鑄當五十錢一種，重一兩八錢。同年十一月諭令各省推行鑄造大錢，并添鑄當百、當五百、當千錢三種；當千者重二兩，當五百者重一兩六錢，銅色紫，當百者重一兩四錢，銅色黃，皆磨濾精工，光澤如鏡，文曰咸豐元寶；而減當五十者為一兩二錢，當十者為四錢四分，又減為三錢五分，再改為二錢六分。四年正月，寶源局又鑄當五錢一種，重二錢二分。接著又鑄當二百、三百、四百大錢。在大約一年左右的時間里，清朝政府開鑄的大錢有當四、五、八、十、二十、三十、四十、五十、一百、二百、三百、四百、五百以及當千等計約十六個等級的咸豐各類大錢。
