據(jù)資料記載：清咸豐年間（1851-1861年），太平天國農(nóng)民起義發(fā)展迅猛，并在江蘇南京建都，此時(shí)清政府賴以鑄錢之用的滇銅（云南省出產(chǎn)的銅料），因道路阻斷而無法運(yùn)進(jìn)北京。一方面是鎮(zhèn)壓起義急需大量的軍餉開銷，一方面是鑄錢的原材料告缺，給清政府造成了嚴(yán)重的財(cái)政困難，最終迫使清政府自咸豐三年開始發(fā)行紙幣和改鑄大錢來彌補(bǔ)財(cái)政虧空。
咸豐三年（1853年）三月五月，戶部首先開鑄當(dāng)十大錢，文曰咸豐元寶，重六錢，與制錢相輔而行。七月乃增鑄當(dāng)五十錢一種，重一兩八錢。同年十一月諭令各省推行鑄造大錢，并添鑄當(dāng)百、當(dāng)五百、當(dāng)千錢三種；當(dāng)千者重二兩，當(dāng)五百者重一兩六錢，銅色紫，當(dāng)百者重一兩四錢，銅色黃，皆磨濾精工，光澤如鏡，文曰咸豐元寶；而減當(dāng)五十者為一兩二錢，當(dāng)十者為四錢四分，又減為三錢五分，再改為二錢六分。四年正月，寶源局又鑄當(dāng)五錢一種，重二錢二分。接著又鑄當(dāng)二百、三百、四百大錢。在大約一年左右的時(shí)間里，清朝政府開鑄的大錢有當(dāng)四、五、八、十、二十、三十、四十、五十、一百、二百、三百、四百、五百以及當(dāng)千等計(jì)約十六個(gè)等級的咸豐各類大錢。

該枚錢幣正面鐫刻“咸豐元寶”四字，錢背篆刻“當(dāng)千”二字，文書寫筆力遒勁，筆劃橫直豎立，布局協(xié)調(diào)，整體書相彰顯端莊古樸。錢幣品相良好，雕刻精致美觀，版式簡單大方。因其鑄造發(fā)行量少，流傳下來的咸豐元寶數(shù)量極其稀少，致使此式咸豐元寶向來得藏家所珍視，值得各位藏友入手收藏。在版式和形制上，當(dāng)千、當(dāng)五百這樣的咸豐大錢，一般版式變化很少，當(dāng)千也就兩個(gè)大版，其一為缶寶八貝，另一就是缶寶行楷、滿文出頭寶。由于滇銅告缺，鑄造時(shí)間短暫，當(dāng)千面值過大等諸多原因，鑄造發(fā)行的數(shù)量特別少，歷經(jīng)百來年風(fēng)霜，至今在市場上咸豐元寶中，當(dāng)千者極少。此枚咸豐元寶寶泉局當(dāng)千，幣面娟秀健康，銘文字體雕琢明晰，面文“咸豐元寶”四字直讀，背穿上下“當(dāng)千”，支配滿文雕琢寶局名，“寶泉”兩字橫排。錢幣銅質(zhì)精巧，包漿純正，分布自然，緊實(shí)不浮，形制規(guī)整，其傳世品質(zhì)色品貌一目了然，地章潔凈，穿口規(guī)整，筆劃有力，筆鋒鮮明，布局協(xié)調(diào)規(guī)范，書法端莊，字口如切，風(fēng)格明朗，源局鑄品之書意神韻昭然，彰顯京局品質(zhì)，實(shí)物存世甚少。
