雞血石同壽山石、田黃石并列，享有中國“四大古玩”的美稱，雞血石因鮮紅色似雞血的辰砂(朱砂)而得名，已有數千年文化，雞血石美麗、晶瑩、稀少，歷來被譽為“石后”、“印石公主”、“章石皇后”，奈何如今雞血石開發已到尾聲，所以出產的雞血石產量相當有限，成為世界上之物，極其稀少，價值難以言喻。雞血石是辰砂條帶的地開石，其顏色比朱砂還鮮紅。因為它的顏色像雞血一樣鮮紅，所以人們俗稱雞血石。我國早發現的雞血石雞血石由于產量相當有限，市場價格經久不衰。
雞血石，因其石色如雞血般鮮紅而得名，是四大印章石之一，產于浙江昌化附近的深山和內蒙古赤峰巴林右旗，因此有昌化雞血石和巴林雞血石兩種。
由于昌化雞血石出產較早，宋代時即有開采，所以其價格比巴林雞血石要高出一段。在特征方面，昌化雞血石較純粹，巴林雞血石多花紋，所以有“南血北地”之稱。“地”是雞血石中的基質，成分以黏土礦物中的地開石或高嶺石為主，顏色多為白、黃、灰等；而“血”則是指雞血石中的不同色調，
雖說雞血石是因石色如雞血而得名，但在傳說中，那可是鳳凰的血。相傳，古代有一種叫“鳥獅”的鳥，生性好斗。一天，覓食飛過玉巖山，見一凰正在孵蛋，頓生惡念，向其發起攻擊。毫無準備的凰被咬斷了腿。鳳聞訊趕到，同仇敵愾，戰勝了“鳥獅”。鳳凰雖然勝利了，但凰鮮血直流，染紅了整個玉巖山，遂成了光澤瑩透如美玉的雞血石。
