袁大頭是民國時期主要流通貨幣之一，“袁大頭”是對袁世凱像系列硬幣的口語俗稱，嚴謹點說叫“袁世凱像背嘉禾銀幣”。北洋政府為了整頓幣制，劃一銀幣，于民國三年（1914年）二月，頒布《國幣條例》十三條，決定實行銀本位制度。《國幣條例》規定：“以庫平純銀六錢四分八厘為價格之單位，定名為圓”，“一圓銀幣，總重七錢二分，銀八九，銅一一”，“一圓銀幣用數無限制”，即以一圓銀幣為無限法償的本位貸幣。根據這一規定，于1914年12月及1915年2月， 先后由造幣總廠及江南造幣廠開鑄一圓銀幣，幣面鐫刻袁世凱頭像，俗稱“袁頭幣”或“袁大頭”。

“袁大頭”銀幣的正面圖案，中間為袁世凱戎裝左側面像，民國三年版 的上方為“中華民國三年”，民國八、九、十年版的為“中華民國X年造”；背面圖案均是兩株交叉的稻穗，中央為“壹圓”、“中圓”（伍角）、“貳角”、“壹角”字樣，后幾種上方分別有“每二枚當一圓”、“每伍枚當一圓”和“每十枚當一圓”的字樣；正面鐫袁世凱側面頭像及發行年號，背面鑄嘉禾紋飾與幣值，袁大頭的官版的成色為89.1%；該幣的外環主要是直齒邊，另外，還鑄有少量工字邊和花齒邊。在該系列幣中，民國三年、九年、十年等一元幣較為常見，民國八年的則較少些。但是，在民國三年的“袁大頭”中，袁世凱“簽字版”則出類拔萃地被收藏愛好者所鐘愛。一類是民國三年天津造幣廠試鑄的意大利制版人的英文簽字版；另一類是袁世凱的左側面像后頸部位的簽字版（大寫英文L·GIORGI）。以上兩類（5種）均為樣品幣，未曾正式流通使用，所以存世不多。
The front pattern of "Yuan Daotou" silver coin is in the middle of the left side of Yuan Shikai's uniform. The top of the three-year edition of the Republic of China is "three years of the Republic of China", and the version of the eighth, ninth and tenth edition of the Republic of China is "made in the X year of the Republic of China". The back pattern is two intersecting rice ears, the center is "one Yuan", "Zhongyuan" (Wu Jiao), "two corners", "one corner", the latter several kinds of above separately have "each two when a circle", "each wood when a circle" and "every ten when a circle" the character; engraves the Yuan Shikai side avatar and the issue year number, the back cast Jiahe ornamentation and the currency value, Yuan Datou's official version color is 89.1%; the outer ring of the coin is mainly straight. Tooth edge, in addition, there are a small number of I-shaped edges and lace. In this series, one dollar, such as three, nine, ten years and so on, is more common, while in 1988, it is less common. However, in the 1993 "Yuan Daotou", Yuan Shikai's "signed version" was well loved by collection enthusiasts. One is the English signature version of the Italian plate maker tried to cast by Tianjin Mint in 1993; the other is the signed version of Yuan Shikai's left side image of the back neck (uppercase L ·GIORGI). The above two categories (5 kinds) are sample coins, which have not been formally circulated and used, so they do not exist much.

1915年12月12日，袁世凱宣布接受帝位，復辟帝制，廢除共和政體，改中華民國為中華帝國，廢除民國紀年，改民國五年（公元1916年）為洪憲元年，史稱"洪憲帝制"。是年設計鑄造了袁世凱高纓像中華帝國洪憲紀元飛龍銀幣。該幣由意大利雕版師魯爾智·喬治雕模，天津造幣廠鑄造。銀幣的規格為庫平七錢二分，成色高，含銀量為90%。
洪憲飛龍銀幣正面為袁世凱九分臉正面及胸像，面部稍左側。袁世凱身著大元帥服，頭戴鷺羽高纓冠，胸前佩戴大勛章。背面中央為飛龍圖案，上面鐫“中華帝國”4字，下面鐫“洪憲紀元”4字，齒邊。
On December 12, 1915, Yuan Shikai announced that he would accept the throne, restore the imperial system, abolish the Republican regime, change the Republic of China into the Chinese Empire, abolish the year of the Republic of China, and change the year of the Republic of China (1916 AD) to the first year of Hongxian.
