1889年（光緒十五年），兩廣總督張之洞采納英國匯豐銀行的建議，停鑄七三反版銀幣，改鑄七二反版銀幣。該銀幣正面點圈內為漢文和滿文“光緒元寶”四字，外圍為英文。背面蟠龍居中，周圍鐫“廣東省造庫平七錢二分”十字。由于它的設計款式與清朝其他省份的銀元相反，故俗稱“七二反版”。當此幣之樣幣呈送朝廷審定時，清廷認為洋文列于銀幣正面不合體例，下令將洋文改鐫于背面。因此，此幣只留有試鑄樣幣。
In 1889 (15th year of Guangxu's reign), Governor Zhang Zhidong of Guangdong and Guangxi adopted the suggestion of HSBC Bank of England to stop casting 73-year-old silver coins and change to 72-year-old silver coins.
