皇宋通寶之九疊篆在版別眾多的皇宋通寶錢幣中，有一種俗稱"皇宋九疊篆"的錢幣尤為珍貴。九疊篆又稱上方大篆，秦漢無此制，唐宋以來多用于官印上面。九疊篆是以小篆為基礎(chǔ)，筆畫反復折疊，盤旋屈曲，點畫皆有縱橫兩個方向，填滿空白部分，求得均勻。"曲屈平滿"是九疊篆書法最大的特點。折疊多寡，每一個字的折疊多少，則視筆畫繁簡而定，有五疊、六疊、七疊、八疊、九疊、十疊之分。稱之為九疊，"乃以九為數(shù)之終也，言其多也，"形容其折疊之多。九疊篆盛行于唐、宋、元、明，一直延續(xù)至今。將這種"九疊篆"用于錢文，在數(shù)千種古錢幣中，"皇宋通寶"僅為孤例，故被歷代收藏家視為稀世珍品。關(guān)于皇宋通寶九疊篆的鑄造背景，現(xiàn)今錢幣學家一般認為該錢幣為"置樣錢"，或"開爐錢"，應不是正用品流通錢幣。
