"咸豐"是清文宗的年號，咸豐年間正值太平天國革命運動的高潮時期，當時國家財政入不敷出，民怨沸騰。為了籌措龐大的軍費開支，咸豐三年(公元1853年)清政府被迫開鑄大錢，相繼推出"咸豐重寶"、"咸豐元寶"。為了迅速推行大錢，清政府在原有寶源、寶泉和各省錢局外，又設立熱河寶德局、江蘇寶蘇局、新疆喀什局等地方鑄錢局，其種類冗多，版別繁雜，創(chuàng)有清一代鑄錢之最。
寶浙局自順治六年杭州府局開設以來，至咸豐年間發(fā)生太平天國起義，當時江南地區(qū)是清軍與太平軍的主要戰(zhàn)場，浙江大部分被太平軍占領，連省城杭州也被太平軍攻占，全省唯衢州完獨。為解決軍費問題，清政府咸豐五年從杭州遷局于衢州，二月開始鑄咸豐大錢，有當十、二十、三十、四十、五十、當百及小平錢，以記所鑄省名也，以資軍用。
由于咸豐當十錢屬于大型古錢幣，而且具有多局，多版，多字體，多紋記多材質等奇異特點，此枚錢幣字跡清晰深俊，銅材優(yōu)良，呈淺紫黃色，錢文精美，沒一絲一毫拖泥帶水，正面鑄“咸豐重寶”楷體；背面書漢文“十”字在最上。錢文高挺，字口峻深，地章平潔，字的筆劃之間沒有絲毫粘連。滿文“咸豐重寶”四字，筆劃走勢勻當，布局凝重，字根穿口特深，并有明顯的雕痕，穿廓有一定的拔模度，四角有決意，背“十”相配，較為協(xié)調。具有較高的文化歷史意義與收藏價值。
