淳化元寶是我國最早的御書錢，也是最珍貴的佛寺供養(yǎng)錢。淳化是北宋太宗年號。這批淳化元寶金錢，背鑄佛像，造型奇特，顯然是當(dāng)時皇室專門鑄造并敬奉五臺山寺廟的供養(yǎng)錢。像這樣成批的金質(zhì)佛寺供養(yǎng)錢在我國還是首次發(fā)現(xiàn)，因而具有很高的歷史價值和文物價值。
山西五臺山乃我國四大佛教名山之一，是舉世聞名的佛教圣地。1988年春天修建佛塔時挖出一批淳化佛像金錢，黃金質(zhì)地，成色在90%以上。錢徑2.4厘米，厚0.12厘米，穿徑0.5厘米，每枚重約12克。正面錢文為行書“淳化元寶”四字，背面鑄有左立、右坐兩尊佛像。坐佛背部有佛光屏，立佛為韋馱，手持如意。兩尊佛像下均有蓮花座。佛像造型逼真，體態(tài)栩栩如生。佛身立體隆起錢面0.2厘米，五官清晰可辨。淳化元寶其價值之高，不僅是因為其上圖案雕刻精美，同時也因其背面神態(tài)逼真的兩尊佛像解說之謎。關(guān)于栩栩如生的錢背造像的解說向來多有紛紜，坐像多認(rèn)系觀音，立像則有善財童子及韋馱等說。
