徐世昌早年中舉人,后中進士。自袁世凱小站練兵時就為袁世凱的謀士,并為盟友,互為同道;光緒三十一年(1905年)曾任軍機大臣。徐世昌頗得袁世凱的器重,在袁世凱稱帝時以沉默遠離之。民國五年(1916年)3月袁世凱被迫取消帝制,起用他為國務(wù)卿。民國七年(1918年)10月,徐世昌被國會選為民國大總統(tǒng)。他下令對南方停戰(zhàn),次年召開議和會議。民國十一年(1922年)6月通電辭職,退隱天津租界以書畫自娛,被后人稱為“文治總統(tǒng)”。民國二十八年(1939年)6月5日,徐世昌病故,年85歲,先寄葬于天津桃園村原英國公墓,后同夫人一起歸葬于河南省輝縣市百泉鎮(zhèn)蘇門山下。
