民國三年版正面為袁世凱側面像，上列"中華民國三年"。原中國錢幣博物館副館長、中國錢幣學會副秘書長姚朔民指出:"民國三年(1914年)，北洋3軍閥政府正式鑄造袁世凱頭像銀幣，因幣上鑄有袁世凱側身頭像，故民間俗稱'袁大頭'。
民國三年袁大頭做工精細，袁世凱的面貌勾勒清晰，目光炯炯有神，十分傳神，且字文是用繁體書寫的，歷史意義較大。除此之外，民國三年袁大頭制作材料屬于貴金屬，自身價值較大。而此枚銀元品相精美，保存完好，包漿醇厚，具有很高的收藏價值。
