梅瓶是傳統名瓷,梅瓶以口小只能插梅枝而得名。因瓶體修長,宋時稱為“經瓶”,作盛酒用器,造型挺秀、俏麗,明朝以后被稱為梅瓶。梅瓶也稱“經瓶”,最早出現于唐代,宋遼時期較為流行,并且出現了許多新品種。近代許之衡在《飲流齋說瓷》一書中詳細地描述了梅瓶的形制、特征及名稱由來:“梅瓶口細而頸短,肩極寬博,至脛稍狹,抵于足微豐,口徑之小僅與梅之瘦骨相稱,故名梅瓶。

梅瓶最早出現在唐代,宋遼時期較為流行,并且出現了許多新品。宋代的梅瓶,多為鴨蛋形,腹較豐,有的小口為洗口,器體一般高且偏瘦,肩部向下斜,足部長而接近于直線,底部比較小,器體的最小直徑在肩部之上至口下部,處理手法多樣,常有棱角分明的轉折,整個形體秀長優美。元代的梅瓶造型已經發展得相當成熟,特別是景德鎮生產青花梅瓶為明、清梅瓶的造型延續奠定了基礎。
