與孫像開國紀念幣和袁像銀元比起來，軍政府造四川銅幣流通范圍較窄，發行量與存世量自然無法與前二者相比。由于這個原因，接觸川洋的人比較少，研究者更少。但這并不表示川洋的研究價值和市場價值不高，向來經濟規律和收藏首要以“物以稀為貴”定律為標準。作為特殊歷史時期、地方政權的特殊貨幣，軍政府貨幣具有軍用貨幣和民用貨幣的雙重職能，是歷史的產物，具有不可替代的文物價值，是歷史的見證。

1914年2月8日，國民政府公布發行1種5分鎳幣。民國24年時又發行了5分、10分、20分3種。當時，省內市場流通使用鎳幣較少，直到1936年時，中央銀行才運來了第一批鎳幣1萬元。因數量不多，不夠分配。后運到的第二批鎳幣有5萬元，幣值有5分、10分、20分3種。其中，5分幣有2萬元，10分幣和20分幣各1.5萬元。1935年11月，國民黨政府宣布實行法幣政策，禁止銀元在市面流通。隨后發行可在市場上流通的21種版別的鎳幣；但其實早在1935年初，民國政府已經委派美國費城造幣廠鑄造伍分，拾分，廿分的鎳幣每種11枚，送交國民政府呈遞樣品。國民政府時期制幣事宜多與美國方面往來，如中央造幣廠之籌建，開工后之管理等皆得力于美方。1935年末，上海中央造幣廠正式鑄造鎳幣。
