據說，古法琉璃是公元前493年越國的范蠡鑄劍時發現的，被越王命名為“蠡”。之后范蠡遍訪能工巧匠 ，將“蠡”打造成精美的首飾作為定情之物送給了西施。同年因為戰事，西施前往吳國和親，不得不舍情取義，臨別時將“蠡”送還。傳說中西施的眼淚滴在這“蠡”上，天地日月為之所動，至今還可以看到淚水在其中流動，被后人稱之為“流蠡”（琉璃諧音）。故事雖然凄美，但卻為琉璃增添了無限神秘色彩。

After that, Fan Li visited skilled craftsmen and gave Xi Shi the exquisite jewelry made of Li as a token of his love. In the same year, because of the war, Xi Shi went to Wu and made a marriage. she had to sacrifice her feelings for justice and returned Li when she left. Legend has it that Xi Shi's tears dripped on this "Li", and heaven, earth, sun and moon were moved by it. Up to now, tears can still be seen flowing in it. Later people call it "Liu Li" (homophonic for coloured glaze). Although the story is poignant, it adds infinite mystery to coloured glaze.
古法琉璃的制作工藝相當復雜，火里來、水里去，要幾十道工序才能完成，古法琉璃的精品制作相當費時，有的光制作過程就要十幾二十天，而且主要依靠手工制作。當中的各個環節的把握相當困難，其火候把握之難更可以說是一半靠技藝一半憑運氣，更關鍵的是，古法琉璃不可回收，所以世上沒有兩款一模一樣的琉璃。
