世界藍寶石產地不多，主要有緬甸、斯里蘭卡、泰國、澳大利亞、中國等，但就寶石質量而言，以緬甸、斯里蘭卡質量最佳。依據地質成因不同，可分兩類：一類是緬甸、斯里蘭卡和印度克什米爾產的藍寶石。另一類是澳大利亞、泰國、中國產的藍寶石。藍寶石最大的特點是顏色不均，可見平行六方柱面排列的，深淺不同的平直色帶和生長紋。聚片雙晶發育，常見百葉窗式雙晶紋。裂理多沿雙晶面裂開。二色性強，世界不同產地的藍寶石除上述共同的特點之外，亦因產地不同各具特色。
