玻璃隕石是一種天然玻璃物質(zhì)。由于外觀似黑曜巖，故又稱似黑曜巖。但兩者的成分、結(jié)構(gòu)都不同。中國(guó)古代稱之為雷公墨。唐代劉恂著《嶺表錄異》曾有記載。玻璃隕石內(nèi)常含有氣泡空腔，大小由幾微米至幾毫米，個(gè)別可達(dá)幾厘米。還含有焦石英、柯石英、斜鋯石和隕石中常見(jiàn)的鐵鎳金屬等包體。一般認(rèn)為，玻璃隕石是巨大的隕石或彗核撞擊地球，使地球表層巖石熔融高速濺出坑外急速冷卻而成。
玻璃隕石出現(xiàn)在珠寶玉石市場(chǎng)上，常制作成珠鏈和墜子，顏色呈現(xiàn)墨綠色、綠色，透射光下可看到表面及內(nèi)部有許多圓形細(xì)小氣泡 ， 測(cè)得N=1.535，密度2.359-2.691g/cm3，因氣泡存在影響密度值。
