花錢源于漢代，花錢在早期使用的時候主要是漢族民間自娛自樂的一種玩錢，這種錢幣由于不是流通錢，因此它的材質大都比較粗糙，漢族民間把這種錢俗稱為"花錢"。"花錢"雖然具有錢幣的形態，但不作流通使用，是錢幣中的"非正用品"。漢族民間花錢的種類繁多，諸如開爐、鎮庫、饋贈、祝福、玩賞、戲作、配飾、生肖等等都要鑄錢，這種"錢"，其實是專供某種需要的辟邪品、吉利品、紀念品。

此枚花錢為山鬼雷令花錢，俗稱山鬼花錢，是清代道士用來施法以降妖震鬼驅邪的載體，也可叫法器。經道士開光后，百姓請回掛于家中鎮宅或隨身攜帶保平安。

山鬼花錢正面中間豎書二十七字咒語“雷霆雷霆、殺鬼降精、斬妖辟邪、永保神清。奉太上老君急急如律令敕”。左右為四字符文，又作“仙篆”。符文釋為“雷令殺鬼”，左為“雷令”，右為“殺鬼”。有人將此四字釋為三字：“震山鬼”，是誤將“雷令”釋為“震”，“殺鬼”二字釋為“山鬼”。所謂“山鬼”實為“殺鬼”，“鬼”上為“殺”的意符。原意是“鬼”頭上置三枚雷丸，丸生火焰。取意雷擊鬼，生火而殺之意，非是“山”的象形字。

It is not the Hieroglyphic Character of "mountain" that intends to strike a ghost by lightning and kill by lighting a fire.
花錢的背面為楷體陽文八卦紋飾和乾—兌—離—震—巽—坎—艮—坤八個楷書陽文，八個陽 文字就是八卦方位.“山鬼”，最早出現在我國戰國時期“山鬼”有很多種說法，人們說山鬼是獨足精怪 。明代時期，很多文史學者認為山鬼就是山神。《山鬼》中描繪的山鬼，花錢，是民間小孩冬天所戴的 大風帽后面佩戴的一種大銅錢，作用就是祈求辟邪保平安。
