古代銅鎖發展于5000年的歷史長河，發展于漢代，昌盛于明清。最早的古鎖是“觿”，屬我國最古老的鑰匙雛形；“石錯”、“骨錯”就是鎖具的雛形。古代銅鎖的發展每個朝代都不一樣，古鎖具有代表性的是西周的青銅鎖、漢代的三簧鎖，唐代的蝦尾銀鎖和宋代的方身鎖、明代的三色鎖，清代的長命鎖，都是那個時代銅鎖的時代特征。
