通寶，是中國唐以后錢幣的一種名稱，因鑄文中有“通寶”字樣而得名。在錢幣上鑄“通寶”字樣，起源于唐高祖武德四年（621年）廢五銖錢而鑄的“開元通寶”。開元通寶重二銖四壘，十枚重一兩。從此，銅錢不再是重如其文，以重量來鑄名了，改稱“通寶”流通。錢幣也真正開始成為貨幣符號，不再以貨幣自身價值來交換了。以后歷代都沿用通寶，并在通寶二字前冠以年號、朝代或國名，鑄于幣面。
