香爐，是漢代時期設計的，最初采用青銅為材料，為熏香而設計的。熏香并不完全是古代文人生活中的點綴，它還有熏香衣物、消除疲勞以及驅散蚊蟲等作用。

熏香的歷史在我國由來已久，漢代著名的博山爐就是人們為熏香而設計的，最初采用青銅為材料，漢代的博山爐就是青銅制成的。漢代以后，香爐的材質逐漸豐富起來。宋代出現了瓷制的博山爐，但是它禁不住香粉的燒烤，很快就變成了文人的把玩之物。諸如此類，以后出現的玉質香爐、翡翠香爐等等，也都是一種用來陳設或者把玩的觀賞品。與實用器相比，陳設器的價值也許更高。

此件乾隆年制香爐，包漿自然，爐身形制規整。通體光素，盡顯銅爐精純美質。銅質精量，入手沉甸，寶光可比良金，乃精銅鑄煉所致。器表呈鱔魚黃色，光澤內斂。皮色沉靜渾厚，端麗容穆，渾然天成。底款書寫“乾隆年制”，器表沉穩，光華內斂，色澤蘊藏于內，映出黯淡奇光，燦爛自然，給人以細膩柔滑之感。敦厚之中不失靈巧精致，是為書房陳設雅器。有爐光怪真異絕，肌膩肉好神清和，工藝精細，融鑄造、拋光、鏤空等多種工藝于一體，為當時上層人士所用，極具收藏價值。
