袁大頭是民國時期主要流通貨幣之一，“袁大頭”是對袁世凱像系列硬幣的口語俗稱，嚴謹點說叫“袁世凱像背嘉禾銀幣”。辛亥革命以后，袁世凱就任“臨時大總統”之職，后又成為正式大總統。當時，為了鞏固國內政局穩定，發展民族經濟，也為“制憲”和“稱帝”作準備，于是發布《國幣條例》，毅然決定在全國“統一幣制”。
