《中國青銅器》記載：“幾何紋大致有連珠紋弦紋……百乳雷紋……菱形雷紋、網紋等”，其中提到“百乳雷紋”，并未指出幾何紋飾包括乳釘紋。其實，百乳雷紋應該是乳釘紋的一種。高蒙河在《銅器與中國文化》中說：“乳釘紋突起的乳突，排列成單行或方陣式。多見于商代晚期和西周時代。”

此乳釘紋形狀簡單、明快，如果就單個乳釘的形狀看，不同的時代是分不出多少區別的。但乳突群與其它幾何紋飾的組合并形成固定的圖案，它們在不同的時代各領風騷，我們便可據此來分類斷代了。
