和田玉，“中國四大名玉”之一（其三為陜西藍田玉、遼寧岫玉和河南獨山玉）。傳統(tǒng)狹義范疇特指新疆和田地區(qū)出產(chǎn)的玉石，以和田“子料”為代表聞名于世；廣義的和田玉指軟玉（真玉）。和田玉雖然因新疆和田而命名，但其本身不是地域概念，并非特指新疆和田地區(qū)出產(chǎn)的玉，而是一類產(chǎn)品的名稱。中國把透閃石成份占98%以上的石頭都命名為和田玉，都在國標范圍內。
秦始皇統(tǒng)一中國的時候，和田玉因產(chǎn)于昆侖山被稱為“昆山之玉”，以后又因位于“于闐國”境內而被稱為“于闐玉”。直到清光緒九年（1883年）設立和田直隸州時，才被正式命名為“和田玉”。
Hetian Jade is one of the four famous Chinese Jades (the third is Lantian Jade of Shaanxi Province, Xiuyu of Liaoning Province and Dushan Jade of Henan Province). Traditional narrow-sense category refers to the jade produced in Hetian area of Xinjiang, which is famous for its "sub-material" and the broad-sense Hetian jade refers to nephrite (genuine jade). Although Hetian Jade is named after Hetian in Xinjiang, it is not a regional concept in itself. It does not refer specifically to the jade produced in Hetian in Xinjiang, but is the name of a class of products. When Qin Shihuang unified China, Hetian Jade was called "the Jade of Kunshan" because it was produced in Kunlun Mountains, and later it was called "the Jade of Yutian" because it was located in the territory of "the State of Yutian". It was not until the establishment of Hotan Zhili Prefecture in the ninth year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (1883) that it was officially named "Hotan Jade".

和田玉用來比喻君子的美好品德，還常常當作情人間表示愛慕的信物。
“籽”一般而言主要是針對植物來說，指的是植物所結的種籽，同時包含有孕育的含義，是植物生命的一個過程。“仔”主要是指動物，根據(jù)讀音來看有兩層意思：在讀作“zi”的時候，指的是幼小的意思；讀“zai”的時候泛指幼小的人或動物。把和田玉的子料稱為“仔料”、“籽料”的情況在平時比較多見，這兩個稱呼反映了和田玉子料外形圓潤、個頭小的特征。但在仔細推敲之后，這兩種稱呼都不能準確的反映出和田玉子料的本質。
“子”字所代表的含義廣泛而全面，有“種子”、“子女”、“幼小”等意，沒有物性之分。因此，用“子”來表示和田玉卵石料，不僅能反映卵石料外形的特征，更從成因上體現(xiàn)了與山料的因果關系，“子料”是由母體奮力出來的玉石，在繼承了山料質地特征的同時，再經(jīng)過河流搬運和長期沖刷等因素的結合下，成為和田玉的精華。
還有另外一個原因就是，玉是能夠經(jīng)得起歲月的考驗，不會時來時走，忽有忽無。玉的堅貞永恒，代表了人們對愛情的向往：堅貞、永恒。用玉作為愛情信物，表達了人們對白頭偕老忠貞愛情的美好意愿。因此玉作為信物來說是能夠充分表達情人之間的各種情感。
