和田玉，“中國(guó)四大名玉”之一（其三為陜西藍(lán)田玉、遼寧岫玉和河南獨(dú)山玉）。傳統(tǒng)狹義范疇特指新疆和田地區(qū)出產(chǎn)的玉石，以和田“子料”為代表聞名于世；廣義的和田玉指軟玉（真玉）。和田玉雖然因新疆和田而命名，但其本身不是地域概念，并非特指新疆和田地區(qū)出產(chǎn)的玉，而是一類產(chǎn)品的名稱。中國(guó)把透閃石成份占98%以上的石頭都命名為和田玉，都在國(guó)標(biāo)范圍內(nèi)。
秦始皇統(tǒng)一中國(guó)的時(shí)候，和田玉因產(chǎn)于昆侖山被稱為“昆山之玉”，以后又因位于“于闐國(guó)”境內(nèi)而被稱為“于闐玉”。直到清光緒九年（1883年）設(shè)立和田直隸州時(shí)，才被正式命名為“和田玉”。
Hetian Jade is one of the four famous Chinese Jades (the third is Lantian Jade of Shaanxi Province, Xiuyu of Liaoning Province and Dushan Jade of Henan Province). Traditional narrow-sense category refers to the jade produced in Hetian area of Xinjiang, which is famous for its "sub-material" and the broad-sense Hetian jade refers to nephrite (genuine jade). Although Hetian Jade is named after Hetian in Xinjiang, it is not a regional concept in itself. It does not refer specifically to the jade produced in Hetian in Xinjiang, but is the name of a class of products. “籽”一般而言主要是針對(duì)植物來說，指的是植物所結(jié)的種籽，同時(shí)包含有孕育的含義，是植物生命的一個(gè)過程。“仔”主要是指動(dòng)物，根據(jù)讀音來看有兩層意思：在讀作“zi”的時(shí)候，指的是幼小的意思；讀“zai”的時(shí)候泛指幼小的人或動(dòng)物。把和田玉的子料稱為“仔料”、“籽料”的情況在平時(shí)比較多見，這兩個(gè)稱呼反映了和田玉子料外形圓潤(rùn)、個(gè)頭小的特征。但在仔細(xì)推敲之后，這兩種稱呼都不能準(zhǔn)確的反映出和田玉子料的本質(zhì)。
“子”字所代表的含義廣泛而全面，有“種子”、“子女”、“幼小”等意，沒有物性之分。因此，用“子”來表示和田玉卵石料，不僅能反映卵石料外形的特征，更從成因上體現(xiàn)了與山料的因果關(guān)系，“子料”是由母體奮力出來的玉石，在繼承了山料質(zhì)地特征的同時(shí)，再經(jīng)過河流搬運(yùn)和長(zhǎng)期沖刷等因素的結(jié)合下，成為和田玉的精華。
還有另外一個(gè)原因就是，玉是能夠經(jīng)得起歲月的考驗(yàn)，不會(huì)時(shí)來時(shí)走，忽有忽無。玉的堅(jiān)貞永恒，代表了人們對(duì)愛情的向往：堅(jiān)貞、永恒。用玉作為愛情信物，表達(dá)了人們對(duì)白頭偕老忠貞愛情的美好意愿。因此玉作為信物來說是能夠充分表達(dá)情人之間的各種情感。

The "zi" is a kind of jade made by the mother, which inherits the characteristics of the mountain materials, and is formed by the combination of river transportation and long-term erosion.
