《大明盛世》畫的主要內容是：公元1433年，以南京夫子廟為中心的明朝秦淮風光。明宣宗宣德八年春，南京久旱。七歲的皇太子朱祁鎮，即后來的明英宗，隨父皇明太孫宣宗朱瞻基、生母孫皇后，其弟朱祁鈺即后來的代宗，御使振恤，巡游南京夫子廟。明朝四世三位皇帝（朱祁鎮兩次出任皇帝），英宗的母親孫皇后皇太后，同時出現在一幅畫中。畫中還有其他未考的皇親國戚。成畫的時間是公元1442年、明英宗正統七年壬戌。其時英宗朱祁鎮已十六歲，親政的年齡。
《大明盛世圖》為中國十大傳世名畫之一，目前經中國書畫協會證實《大明盛世圖》真跡還在民間、經嘉德、保利一線拍賣公司估價，真跡《大明盛世圖》都是價值不可估量的
《大明盛世圖》書畫卷共有五部分組成：
一、畫題篆書大字，大明盛世，壬戌袁江。作品完成于明英宗正統七年，公元1442年。其時，戴進五十四歲。明宣宗一家人，御使南京秦淮河九年以后，太子朱祁鎮已經登基明英宗皇帝七年。
二、主畫面手卷，絹本，墨筆，鐵線描和暈葉描。描繪南京通濟門，直到聚寶門即今天的中華門，十里秦淮河明代民情風物，十處景觀。夫子廟大成殿、天下文樞、文德橋、貢院等，564年前景觀歷歷在目。畫面上五百二十多位明代人物，皇帝皇后太子皇子等、明朝其他皇族，社會各界軍民百姓，栩栩如生，秦淮河畔熙熙攘攘熱熱鬧鬧，好一幅明朝太平盛世圖。

四、清朝翁同龢光緒九年行書評。翁當時任工部尚書充軍機大臣。行書評價如下：余閱此圖實為少見之珍品明代戴進之筆師出馬遠其筆法精細決非一般畫工所比喻宜以選入神品。
五、收藏印。萬歷 鑒藏寳 朱印，位于題跋。
