光緒年間，1875年－1908年，由兩廣總督張之洞率先引進(jìn)英國(guó)鑄幣機(jī)器鑄造銀元和銅元。之后各省紛紛仿效。 一共有十九個(gè)省局鑄造，除中央戶部，地方省所鑄銅元，皆在其正面上緣鐫寫省名，背文為滿文記局名，也有星月紋。江南省就是十九個(gè)省局的其中一個(gè)，滿清入關(guān)后，于清順治二年（1645年）沿明制設(shè)江南承宣布政使司，即廢除南京為國(guó)都的地位，巡撫 衙門設(shè)于江寧府（今南京）。清代的江南省前身是明朝的南直隸江南省，范圍大致相當(dāng)于今天的江蘇省、上海市和安徽省。
