吳二年（1368）正月，朱元璋稱(chēng)帝，建立明朝，改元洪武。同年三月，明太祖朱元璋于命京城（南京）工部寶源局及各省寶泉局鑄行“洪武通寶”，由工部主管鑄錢(qián)，下設(shè)寶源局。朱元璋為避諱元朝的元字，把所鑄之錢(qián)錢(qián)文一律叫通寶而不叫元寶，而不只是為避諱他自己的名字，以后所鑄之錢(qián)也都沒(méi)有元寶錢(qián)文。
In the first month of the second year of Wu Dynasty (1368), Zhu Yuanzhang was called emperor. He established the Ming Dynasty and changed it to Hongwu. In March of the same year, Zhu Yuanzhang, Taizu of the Ming Dynasty, cast "Hongwu Tongbao" in Baoyuan Bureau of the Ministry of Works of Mingjing (Nanjing) and Baoquan Bureau of various provinces. The director of the Ministry of Works cast money and set up Baoyuan Bureau. In order to avoid the Yuan characters of the Yuan Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang called all the coins and articles Tongbao instead of Yuanbao, not only to avoid his own name, but also no Yuanbao Qianwen in the future.
洪武通寶錢(qián)制沿續(xù)元末朱元璋所鑄“大中通寶”的形制，分為五等，規(guī)定小平錢(qián)，每文重一錢(qián)，折二錢(qián)重二錢(qián)，當(dāng)三錢(qián)重三錢(qián)，當(dāng)五錢(qián)重五錢(qián)，當(dāng)十錢(qián)重一兩。洪武通寶應(yīng)運(yùn)而生，是該歷史時(shí)期錢(qián)幣改革的產(chǎn)物，有著濃厚的歷史熏陶。
